Polygonum cuspidatum (Reynoutria japonica, Huzhang) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. This review covers its botany, phytochemistry (resveratrol, polydatin, emodin, anthraquinones), and pharmacology, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, cardiovascular-protective, antimicrobial and antiviral activities.
