Mechanistic basis
This use is associated with the plant's diuretic, urinary antiseptic actions. Further evidence for that pharmacology:
This phytopharmacological review of Juniperus communis summarises its traditional use as an antidiarrhoeal, anti-inflammatory, astringent and diuretic agent and its documented antioxidant, antimicrobial and hypoglycaemic pharmacology.
Juniperus communis extract ameliorated lipopolysaccharide-induced acute kidney injury in vivo and in vitro by activating the AMPK pathway and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, supporting juniper's anti-inflammatory and renal/urinary applications.
