Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as a tool for helping with Metabolic support
inferred from antidiabetic action
2 sources supporting Wormwood for Metabolic support. Includes scientific publications, books, monographs and traditional-use references.
Mechanistic basis
This use is associated with the plant's antidiabetic (blood-sugar lowering) action. Further evidence for that pharmacology:
Aqueous and ethyl acetate extracts of Artemisia absinthium showed antioxidant activity and inhibited pancreatic alpha-amylase and intestinal alpha-glucosidase in vitro and in vivo, supporting the antidiabetic use of wormwood.
Artemisia absinthium ethanolic extract reduced oxidative stress and modulated TLR4, S100A4, Bax and Bcl-2 gene expression in the kidney of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, demonstrating antidiabetic and antioxidant renoprotective effects of wormwood.
Shikimic acid isolated from Artemisia absinthium leaves inhibited protein glycation in the retina of diabetic rats, indicating an antidiabetic, anti-glycation activity of wormwood.
