Rose hip, rose hip and seed and rose hip seed, all were negatively monographed by the German Commission E due to insufficient evidence of effects and effectiveness. Therefore a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to summarize the pharmacological and clinical effects of Rosa canina L. to reevaluate its usefulness in traditional medicine. For various preparations of rose hip and rose hip and seed, antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects have been demonstrated. Lipophilic constituents are involved in those mechanisms of action. The proprietary rose hip and seed powder Litozin has been employed successfully in a number of exploratory studies in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and low back pain. However, the sizes of the clinical effects for the different indications need to be determined to assure clinical significance. There is also a rationale behind the use of Litozin as part of a hypocaloric diet based on the rose hip probiotic, stool regulating and smooth muscle-relaxing actions, as well as the rose hip seed lipid-lowering, antiobese and antiulcerogenic effects. Further research is needed to clarify the importance of the reported promising experimental effects in clinical use and to characterize the optimum rose hip seed oil preparation for topical use in the treatment of skin diseases.

Rosa rugosa Thunb. (R. rugosa) has been used as food and medicine and not just as ornamental plant for nearly a thousand years, its nutritional and medicinal value have been recognized by people. It contains a variety of biological active ingredients that are beneficial to the human body. R. rugosa polysaccharides are also one of the main bioactive ingredients, which have many health benefits such as anti-diabetes, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-tumour, moisture-preserving and anti-alcoholic liver disease. This review summarizes the extraction, purification, structural characteristics, health benefits, and structure-activity relationships of R. rugosa polysaccharides. In addition, current and potential applications of R. rugosa polysaccharides are analyzed and supplemented, hoping to provide some valuable insights for further research and development of functional food additives, nutritional supplements, additives for daily chemical products, and even pharmaceuticals.
Rosa rugosa Thunb. is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine with homology of medicine and food in China for a long history. The total flavonoids from R. rugosa Thunb. (TFR), possessing antioxidant, anti-tumor, antidepressant, and antibacterial activities, can effectively prevent and treat cardiovascular, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and other diseases. However, few studies have focused on TFR analyses and no comprehensive review has yet been published. In order to provide a theoretical foundation and research direction for further study and development, this paper methodically reviewed the extraction and purification procedure, chemical composition, biological activity, toxicology, and application in food of TFR on the basis of previous research. A total of 102 distinct flavonoids have been isolated from R. rugosa Thunb. Further pharmacological activities and chemical analyses research will contribute to the development of TFR products in R. rugosa Thunb.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with significant impacts on quality of life. Current treatments face challenges like high costs and side effects. This study explores the therapeutic potential of Rosa rugosa polysaccharide (RRPS) and its nanofiber membrane in psoriasis treatment. RRPS was extracted using a yeast fermentation enzyme-assisted method and characterized. In vitro studies on RAW264.7 macrophages showed that RRPS significantly reduced nitric oxide (NO) production, indicating anti-inflammatory effects. The nanofiber membrane, fabricated via electrospinning, has high porosity and sustained-release properties, enhancing drug delivery and skin barrier repair. In vivo studies using an imiquimod-induced psoriasis mouse model demonstrated that both RRPS and its nanofiber membrane improved psoriasis symptoms, reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6, IL-17A). Mechanistically, they suppressed the PI3K-AKT/mTOR pathway. The nanofiber membrane showed superior efficacy compared to RRPS alone, highlighting the benefits of electrospinning. This study suggests that Rosa rugosa polysaccharide and its nanofiber membrane could be a novel, effective, and safe alternative for psoriasis treatment by targeting the PI3K-AKT/mTOR pathway.
