Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) as a tool for helping with Inflammation (general)

The antimicrobial activity of the Epilobium angustifolium, E. hirsutum, E. palustre, E. tetragonum and E. rosmarinifolium ethanolic extracts was studied in vitro on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was also evaluated using the Artemia salina test. All the extracts showed antimicrobial activity in a range of concentrations between 10 and 650 microgml of dry extract. E. angustifolium and E. rosmarinifolium had the most broad spectrum of action inhibiting bacteria, yeasts and fungi. The extracts were devoid of toxicity on Artemia salina within the range of antimicrobial concentrations, suggesting that the action is selective on microorganisms.

High-throughput sequencing from symptomatic tomato and pepper plants collected in Panama rendered the complete genome of the southern tomato virus (isolate STV_Panama) and bell pepper endornavirus (isolate BPEV_Panama), and almost-complete genomes of three other BPEV isolates. Tomato chlorosis virus, tomato mosaic virus, and impatiens necrotic spot virus were also detected. Analysis of the complete genome of STV and BPEV worldwide isolates revealed nucleotide diversities of 0.004246 and 0.070523, respectively. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis showed two main groups for each virus (I and II), and several subgroups for BPEV (IA, IB, IC, IIA and IIB). Isolate STV_Panama clustered with NC_12-03-08 from USA and Tom3-T from France (99.97% nucleotide identity) in Group I and BPEV_Panama was close to the Canadian isolate BPEV_Ontario (99.66% nucleotide identity) in Subgroup IB. No correlation was observed between geographic and genetic distances for both viruses. Panamanian BPEV isolates were divergent, belonging to Groups I and II (nucleotide identities > 87.33%). Evolutionary analysis showed purifying selection in all encoding regions of both viruses, being stronger in the overlapping region of both STV genes. Finally, recombination was detected in BPEV but not in STV. This is the first report of STV and BPEV in Panama.

The Kluyveromyces marxianus yeast recently has gained considerable attention due to its applicability in high-value-added product manufacturing. In order to intensify the biosynthesis rate of a target product, reaching high biomass concentrations in the reaction medium is mandatory. Fed-batch processes are an attractive and efficient way how to achieve high cell densities. However, depending on the physiology of the particular microbial strain, an optimal media composition should be used to avoid by-product synthesis and, subsequently, a decrease in overall process effi-ciency. Thus, the aim of the present study was to optimise the synthetic growth medium and feeding solution compositions (in terms of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium concentrations) for high cell density K. marxianus fed‑batch cultivations. Additionally, the biomass yields from the vitamin mixture and other macro/microelements were identified. A model predictive control algorithm was successfully applied for a fed-batch cultivation control. Biomass growth and substrate consumption kinetics were compared with the mathematical model predictions. Finally, 2‑phenylethanol biosynthesis was induced and its productivity was estimated. The determined optimal macronutrient ratio for K. marxianus biomass growth was identified as C:N:P = 1:0.07:0.011. The maximal attained yeast biomass concentration was close to 70 g·L-1 and the 2-PE biosynthesis rate was 0.372 g·L−1·h−1, with a yield of 74% from 2-phenylalanine.
