Comparisons of large (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) and small (Vaccinium oxycoccos L., Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) cranberry in British Columbia by phytochemical determination, antioxidant potential, and metabolomic profiling with chemometric analysis
Abstract
The chemical composition of the small cranberries Vaccinium oxycoccos and V. vitis-idaea was characterised and compared with the cultivated large cranberry V. macrocarpon. V. oxycoccos contained the five major cranberry anthocyanins plus serotonin, melatonin and ascorbic acid, and metabolomic profiling differentiated the species, with antioxidant activity correlating with vitamin C content.
