Insights into Molecular Mechanisms of Anticancer Activity of Juniperus communis Essential Oil in HeLa and HCT 116 Cells
Abstract
Juniperus communis berry essential oil was studied for antitumor potential in cervical cancer HeLa and colorectal HCT 116 cells. It produced concentration-dependent reductions in cell viability and long-term cytotoxic effects, induced the intrinsic apoptosis pathway (cleaved caspase-3, increased Bax/Bcl-2, cytochrome C release) and arrested HeLa cells in the S phase, highlighting juniper berry essential oil as a natural agent with anticancer potential.
