Abstract

The bitter resins in hops (Humulus lupulus) modulate GABA receptors, producing sedative effects and enhancing sleep. A hop extract containing xanthohumol and humulone dose-dependently increased sleep duration in a pentobarbital model, enhanced non-rapid-eye-movement (deep delta-wave) sleep, and acted by binding the GABA site on the GABA-A receptor while increasing brain GABA and 5-HT receptor levels, supporting hops as a natural sleep aid.
