Expectorant and antitussive effect of Hedera helix and Rhizoma coptidis extracts mixture
Abstract
The expectorant (phenol-red tracheal secretion) and antitussive (citric-acid-induced cough) effects of Hedera helix and Rhizoma coptidis extracts were assessed in mice and guinea pigs. Hedera helix extract significantly increased tracheal secretion and inhibited cough, and a 3:1 mixture with Rhizoma coptidis showed optimal, dose-dependent expectorant and antitussive effects, supporting the traditional use of ivy leaf for respiratory complaints.
