Abstract

Diosgenin, a steroidal sapogenin abundant in medicinal herbs such as Dioscorea villosa (wild yam) and a major starting material for steroidal drugs, has wide-ranging pharmacological activities. This review summarises the therapeutic potential of diosgenin and its derivatives against neurological disorders including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, brain injury, neuroinflammation and ischemia, mediated through multiple signaling pathways.
