Antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic effects of hawthorn extract (Crataegus oxyacantha) in broiler chickens
Abstract
Hawthorn extract (Crataegus oxyacantha) added to drinking water improved growth performance and decreased abdominal fat in broiler chickens. It lowered circulating malondialdehyde, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, raised ferric-reducing antioxidant power and HDL, and upregulated antioxidant enzymes (catalase, SOD, glutathione peroxidase), demonstrating antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic effects.
