Effects of Carum carvi L. (Caraway) extract and essential oil on TNBS-induced colitis in rats
Abstract
Caraway (Carum carvi) has anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and carminative properties. Caraway hydroalcoholic extract and essential oil were tested in a TNBS-induced model of colitis in rats; at all doses tested they reduced colon tissue lesions and colitis indices (comparable to prednisolone and mesalazine references), supporting an anti-colitic and digestive benefit of caraway.
