Abstract

Pharmacognosy reference: during collection bearberry (uva-ursi) is commonly confused with cowberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) and box (Buxus sempervirens); poisonous B. sempervirens, which lacks the active arbutin, has occasionally been used to adulterate the drug. Bearberry leaves are distinguished by a spatulate outline, entire margin and rounded apex, whereas box leaves have a notched (emarginate) apex and a loose, separable epidermis on the underside. Anchors the bearberry/box confusion and the leaf-margin/apex distinguishing tests.
