Hops (Humulus lupulus) Identification Guide
Abstract
Foraging identification guide noting that hop shoots could be confused with other climbing plants such as black bryony (Dioscorea communis), white bryony (Bryonia dioica) and field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), which are poisonous; hop leaves have a nettle-like toothed margin and are lobed and hops have no tendrils, unlike the toxic lookalikes. Anchors the hop-shoot/bryony confusion and the toothed-leaf/no-tendril distinguishing test.
