Labrador Tea - Tonic or Toxic?
Abstract
Bushcraft-educator guide warning that Labrador tea can be confused with the poisonous bog shrubs Kalmia (sheep laurel, mountain laurel) and Andromeda polifolia (bog rosemary), all of which contain grayanotoxins; the toxic lookalikes have smooth, pale leaf undersides with no aroma, whereas genuine Labrador tea has a rust-coloured woolly felt on the leaf underside and an aromatic smell, and bog rosemary bears pink flowers. Anchors the Labrador-tea/bog-rosemary confusion and the woolly-rusty-underside plus aroma distinguishing tests.
