Foraging Guide: Lords and Ladies (Arum maculatum)
Abstract
Foraging guide: notes that lords-and-ladies (Arum maculatum) could be confused with common sorrel (Rumex acetosa); all parts contain calcium oxalate crystals that cause immense pain and irritation, are particularly painful on the mucous membranes of the mouth, and in severe cases ingestion could cause death through asphyxiation; the plant is identified by its hooded spathe and netted leaf veins. Anchors the sorrel-versus-Arum confusion, the hooded-flower and netted-vein tests, and Arum's calcium-oxalate toxicity.
