Abstract

Mahonia aquifolium stem-bark crude extract and its alkaloids berberine and jatrorrhizine inhibited staphylococci, Propionibacterium acnes and Candida from skin and mucosal infections, providing a rational basis for the traditional use of Oregon grape for localised skin and mucosal infections.
