Evaluation of spermicidal activity of saponosides from Saponaria officinalis (Caryophyllaceae), Glycyrrhiza glabra (Fabaceae) and Herniaria glabra (Caryophyllaceae)
Abstract
Methanolic saponin extracts from the roots of Saponaria officinalis (and Glycyrrhiza glabra, Herniaria glabra) showed potent dose- and time-dependent spermicidal activity, immobilising and devitalising spermatozoa, suggesting these natural saponosides could be safer alternatives to chemical spermicides.
