Safety, Cautions & Contraindications
CRITICAL: do not put non-sterile, homemade eyebright preparations directly into the eye - this risks serious eye infection. Use only commercially prepared sterile products in the eye, or apply a strained, cooled infusion as a compress over closed eyelids.
Traditional use only; persistent eye symptoms, pain, discharge or vision change need assessment by an eye-care professional. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established.
Generally safe at therapeutic doses. Hyssop essential oil is neurotoxic in high doses (contains pinocamphone and isopinocamphone) — internal use of the essential oil is contraindicated, especially in epilepsy, pregnancy, and children. The herb (dried or fresh) at normal tea doses does not carry this risk. Not recommended internally in medicinal doses during pregnancy.
Duke (2002) rates hyssop as ++ and notes clinical evidence (score 2) for antiviral activity, particularly against herpes simplex virus, which is notable clinical validation for this herb. It also demonstrates experimental antibacterial, antispasmodic, and expectorant activities. Duke warns that hyssop essential oil is potentially convulsant at higher doses (due to pinocamphone content) and should not be used in epilepsy or by children. Small, semi-parasitic annual herb (drawing some nutrients from the roots of neighbouring grasses) with tiny, opposite, toothed leaves and delicate, two-lipped white to pale lilac flowers marked with purple veins and a yellow throat spot, giving a bright, eye-like appearance that inspired both its common and Latin names.[11]
Aromatic, semi-woody perennial subshrub with slender, upright, square stems typical of the mint family. The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and highly aromatic. Small, two-lipped, violet-blue (occasionally pink or white) flowers are borne in dense whorled spikes along the upper stem.[1]
Habitat
Grows in short, unimproved grassland, pastures, meadows and dunes on well-drained soils, always in association with grasses on which it partially parasitises; native to Europe.[11]

Traditional Uses
Hyssop has an ancient Mediterranean and biblical reputation as a cleansing, aromatic herb, traditionally used as an expectorant and antimicrobial remedy for coughs, bronchitis and respiratory catarrh, and as a digestive bitter and mild antiviral herb, notably for cold sores (herpes simplex).[1]
