Safety, Cautions & Contraindications
As a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae/ragweed), it can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people; high doses reportedly cause stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.
Avoid during pregnancy because of a traditional uterine-stimulating reputation.
Although traditionally used to support milk supply, there is no scientifically valid clinical evidence for the galactagogue use.
Allergy risk in individuals sensitive to Asteraceae (daisy family) plants such as ragweed and chamomile.
Avoid medicinal use in anyone with a blocked bile duct or gallstones; use caution with gallbladder or serious liver disease.
May potentiate prescription diuretics; possible interactions with lithium and drugs metabolised by the liver.
Can accumulate soil pollutants and heavy metals; harvest from clean, unpolluted sites.

Botanical Description
Branching annual herb with a hairy, reddish, ridged stem and spiny, deeply lobed leaves with prominent pale veins. The flower heads are pale yellow, thistle-like, surrounded by a whorl of spiny, leaf-like bracts, giving the plant its 'spotted thistle' appearance.[4]
Perennial herb (Asteraceae) with a deep taproot, forming a basal rosette of deeply toothed, lance-shaped leaves - the name 'dandelion' comes from the French 'dent-de-lion', lion's tooth. Hollow flowering stalks each bear a single, bright yellow composite flower head made entirely of ray florets, followed by the familiar spherical 'clock' of parachute-tufted seeds (achenes) that disperse on the wind.[50]
Habitat
Grows on dry, sunny waste ground, roadsides and rocky slopes; native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia and naturalised elsewhere as a garden escape.[4]
Native to Europe and Asia, now a cosmopolitan weed found on every continent except Antarctica; grows in lawns, meadows, roadsides, waste ground and disturbed soil of almost any type.[50]
Harvesting
The flowering aerial parts are cut as the plant comes into flower, in summer, and dried in a warm, shaded, airy place to preserve the bitter principle cnicin.[4]
Leaves are picked young in spring for the mildest flavour; the root is dug in autumn (traditionally after the first frost), when its inulin and bitter-principle content is considered optimal; flowers are picked as they open.[50, 53]
Traditional Uses
Blessed thistle has a long European folk reputation as a bitter digestive tonic for loss of appetite and dyspepsia (an approved use under German Commission E) and, more anecdotally, as a traditional galactagogue to support breast-milk supply, though robust clinical evidence for the latter is lacking.[4, 11]
Dandelion is one of the most widely used bitter tonic herbs worldwide, traditionally taken as a digestive bitter and mild diuretic - the French name 'pissenlit' (wet-the-bed) reflects this - and the root specifically as a liver and gallbladder tonic. Every part is also used as food: spring greens, roasted-root coffee substitute, and flower wine.[50]
Preparations
Dried flowering herb infused briefly in hot water as a bitter digestive tea, taken before meals.
Dosage
Traditional herbal references suggest around 1-2 g of dried herb per cup, taken before meals, up to three times daily. Educational reference only, not a prescription.
