Caffeoylquinic acid derivatives isolated from Solidago virgaurea showed significant in vivo anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema model, providing pharmacological support for the traditional anti-inflammatory use of goldenrod.

Mechanistic basis
This use is associated with the plant's anti-inflammatory action. Further evidence for that pharmacology:
European goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea, Asteraceae) is among the most-researched goldenrod species. This review summarises its ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry (flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins, diterpenes) and pharmacological activities, including diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, spasmolytic and analgesic effects, supporting its use in urinary-tract complaints.
In a double-blind randomized trial on healthy adults, a Solidago virgaurea extract mouthwash modulated the oral microbial biomass without eradicating the commensal flora, supporting a controlled antimicrobial action of goldenrod relevant to oral health.
Solidago virgaurea, traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory herb for prostatic disorders, inhibited the growth of prostatic tumour cells and showed antineoplastic activity in an SCID mouse model.
