Mechanistic basis
This use is associated with the plant's antimicrobial action. Further evidence for that pharmacology:
Artemisia absinthium is a perennial shrubby plant widely used to treat several ailments. Traditionally it has been used for hepatitis, gastritis, jaundice, wound healing, dyspepsia, indigestion, flatulence, gastric pain, anemia and anorexia, and it possesses antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, anti-ulcer, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, antidepressant, analgesic and immunomodulatory activity. Long-term use of the essential oil may be toxic (thujone). The review examines its phytoconstituents and biological activities.
Methanol extracts of Artemisia absinthium, characterised for phenolic compounds, exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity, supporting wormwood as a potential alternative to classical antibiotics.
