Antinociceptive activity of Cnicus benedictus L. leaf extract: a mechanistic evaluation
Abstract
Cnicus benedictus has traditionally been used for stomachache pain. The leaf methanolic extract (CBHE) and its major constituent cnicin showed significant antinociceptive effects in writhing, tail-flick and formalin tests in mice. The mechanism involved opioidergic pathways and the L-arginine/NO/cGMP/ATP-sensitive potassium channel pathway, supporting the traditional analgesic and digestive use of blessed thistle.
