Allergy risk: avoid if you’re allergic to cowslip/other Primula species (European Medicines Agency, 2012). Stomach sensitivity: use caution if you have gastritis or a stomach ulcer—cowslip can upset the stomach in some people (European Medicines Agency, 2012). Possible side effects (especially high dose): nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; allergic reactions can happen (European Medicines Agency, 2012). Pregnancy/breastfeeding: not recommended due to lack of good safety data (European Medicines Agency, 2012). Kids: many preparations are not recommended under 12 (and some root extracts under 4) unless a labeled product specifically allows it (European Medicines Agency, 2012).

Duke (2002) provides clinical evidence (score 2) for cowslip's expectorant and secretolytic activities, consistent with Commission E approval for bronchitis and cough with mucus. Dose: 0.5–1 g root or 1–2 g herb as tea three times daily. Saponins in the root are responsible for the expectorant action. Duke warns that the plant may cause hemolysis in large doses due to saponin content, and caution is warranted in individuals with aspirin sensitivity due to phenolic acid content (Duke, 2002).

Botanical Description

Low perennial herb (Primulaceae) forming a basal rosette of wrinkled, oval, softly hairy leaves that taper abruptly to a winged stalk. A single leafless flowering stem rises from the rosette bearing a one-sided umbel of small, fragrant, deep yellow, funnel-shaped flowers with orange spots at the throat, nodding on slender pedicels.[10]

Habitat

Native across Europe and western Asia, growing in unimproved, species-rich grassland, meadows, pastures, open woodland and hedge banks on calcareous or well-drained soils.[10]

Grows in woodland edges, hedgerows, shaded banks and gardens on moist, humus-rich soils; native to Europe, North Africa and Asia and widely naturalised and cultivated elsewhere.[11]

Traditional Uses

Cowslip has a long European folk tradition as an expectorant remedy for coughs and bronchial catarrh, and the flowers have traditionally been used as a mild sedative and for headache. Modern research on its saponin-rich root supports secretolytic (mucus-thinning) expectorant activity, and its flowers are rich in antioxidant phenolics.[1, 6]

Sweet violet flower and leaf have a long European folk history as a soothing demulcent and expectorant remedy for cough, bronchitis and catarrh, and as a mild sedative for sleeplessness and headache; the flower syrup in particular has a long tradition as a children's cough remedy.[11]

Preparations

Root decoction/tea[1]

Dried root simmered or infused, the traditional expectorant preparation for cough with mucus.

Standardised combination extract[1]

Root is a component of some standardised multi-herb bronchial/cough products (e.g. combined with ivy and thyme).

Syrup (flower)[12]

Fresh flowers infused and combined with sugar syrup as a traditional soothing cough remedy, particularly for children.

Traditional references suggest around 2-4 g of dried flower and leaf per cup, up to three times daily. Note the EU monograph on Violae herba cum flore covers Viola tricolor, a different species, and its posology does not transfer here. Educational reference only, not a prescription.

Confused Part: Low, heart-shaped spring leaves gathered as an edible; lesser celandine forms similar low leaves at the same time and place.
Confusion Context: Sweet violet (Viola odorata) is foraged in early spring for its heart-shaped leaves and flowers. Lesser celandine (Ficaria verna, fig buttercup) grows in the same season and habitat and, as foraging guidance warns, its low-growing leaves closely resemble violet; lesser celandine is toxic to humans in most stages (it contains the acrid irritant protoanemonin). Because their spring leaves are alike, this is a genuine early-season foraging hazard, although cooking destroys the toxin and the acrid taste discourages eating much.
Distinguishing Features: Flowers (decisive): sweet violet has purple (sometimes white) flowers with five uneven petals. Lesser celandine has glossy, bright-yellow star-like flowers with 8-12 petals. A yellow many-petalled flower means lesser celandine, never violet., Leaves: violet leaves are matt and heart-shaped on their own stalks from the base. Lesser celandine leaves are glossier and more kidney- to arrow-shaped, sometimes with pale mottling., Best practice: harvest violet leaves only once you can trace every leaf to a violet plant (ideally in flower), not to a yellow-flowered plant.
Key Test: Wait until the plant flowers, or trace each leaf to its flower. Purple five-petalled flowers with matt heart-shaped leaves = sweet violet. Glossy yellow flowers with 8-12 petals = lesser celandine - do not eat it raw. If you cannot confirm a violet flower, do not gather the leaves.
