Safety, Cautions & Contraindications
Culinary amounts are safe. Concentrated oregano essential oil is a strong irritant - dilute well before any topical use and do not take undiluted oil internally.
May lower blood sugar and has a mild antiplatelet effect, so use caution with antidiabetic or anticoagulant medicines; avoid medicinal/oil doses in pregnancy. Allergy is possible in people sensitive to the mint family (Lamiaceae).
Very well tolerated, even at high doses; the main effects are mild gastrointestinal upset (nausea, loose stools). As a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.
Has a low potential for drug interactions (little effect on liver CYP enzymes), but use caution with medicines that have a narrow therapeutic window. Human pregnancy data are limited, so use cautiously.

Botanical Description
Perennial herb/subshrub (Lamiaceae), 20-80 cm tall, with square, often reddish, downy stems. Leaves are opposite, ovate and aromatic. Small purplish-pink (occasionally white) flowers are borne in dense, flattened, corymb-like clusters at the branch tips.[11]
Robust biennial (occasionally annual) thistle (Asteraceae), 30-150 cm tall. Leaves are glossy dark green with distinctive white marbled veining (the 'milk' of legend), spiny-margined and deeply lobed. Large, solitary, purple-pink thistle-type flower heads are surrounded by spiny bracts, followed by shiny, mottled brown-black seeds - the part used.[12]
Habitat
Native to the Mediterranean, Europe and temperate Asia and widely naturalised elsewhere, growing on dry, sunny grassland, banks and scrubby hillsides, typically on calcareous soils.[11]

Oregano has a long Mediterranean culinary-medicinal tradition as an aromatic digestive bitter and antiseptic remedy for coughs, colds and infections. Modern research on its carvacrol- and thymol-rich essential oil strongly supports broad antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity, consistent with these traditional uses.[11, 12]
Milk thistle has a very long European folk-medicine tradition, documented since antiquity, as a liver tonic, and its seed extract, standardised to the flavonolignan complex silymarin, is one of the most extensively studied herbal hepatoprotectants. Modern research supports antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and liver-protective activity, with growing interest in metabolic/blood-sugar effects.[12, 13]
