Botanical Description

Erect perennial herb with a long, fibrous, pale yellow taproot. The leaves are pinnately compound with numerous small, oval leaflets, giving a soft, ferny appearance. Small, pale yellow, pea-like flowers are borne in loose axillary clusters (racemes), followed by membranous, inflated seed pods that give the species its name.[5]

Perennial herb/subshrub (Lamiaceae), 20-80 cm tall, with square, often reddish, downy stems. Leaves are opposite, ovate and aromatic. Small purplish-pink (occasionally white) flowers are borne in dense, flattened, corymb-like clusters at the branch tips.[11]

Habitat

Native to the grasslands, sunny slopes and forest margins of northern and north-eastern China, Mongolia and parts of Korea; widely cultivated as a medicinal crop across East Asia.[5]

Native to the Mediterranean, Europe and temperate Asia and widely naturalised elsewhere, growing on dry, sunny grassland, banks and scrubby hillsides, typically on calcareous soils.[11]

Harvesting

The root is dug from plants at least four years old, typically in spring or autumn, then cleaned and dried, often sliced into the characteristic pale, fibrous 'coin' slices used in traditional decoctions.[5]

Traditional Uses

Astragalus root (huang qi) is one of the most widely used tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, classified as a 'Qi tonic' for fatigue, low vitality and reduced resistance to colds and infections, and used to support immune, cardiovascular and kidney health.[5, 11]

Oregano has a long Mediterranean culinary-medicinal tradition as an aromatic digestive bitter and antiseptic remedy for coughs, colds and infections. Modern research on its carvacrol- and thymol-rich essential oil strongly supports broad antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity, consistent with these traditional uses.[11, 12]

Preparations

Decoction[5]

Dried, sliced root simmered in water, often alongside other tonic herbs, as the classic traditional Chinese medicine preparation.

Standardised extract[5, 11]

Concentrated extract standardised to polysaccharide or astragaloside IV content, taken as capsules or tablets.

Infusion (tea)[11]

Dried herb steeped in hot water as a digestive, aromatic tea.

Essential oil (diluted, topical/aromatic)[12]

The most-studied form; concentrated oil is a strong irritant and must be well diluted before topical use and never taken undiluted internally.

Emulsified oil (oral, supervised)[13]

A small clinical study used an emulsified oregano oil preparation to clear enteric parasites and improve gut symptoms; oral use of concentrated oil should be supervised.

Dosage

Decoction[14]

The WHO monograph on Radix Astragali gives doses of 3-9 g per day. Traditional Chinese medicine references often cite a considerably higher 9-30 g of dried root per day; WHO's figure is the conservative regulatory-tier one and is stated here in preference.
