Safety, Cautions & Contraindications
EXTERNAL USE ONLY on unbroken skin. Arnica is toxic if swallowed and can cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, irregular heartbeat and, in serious cases, cardiac arrest; the only safe oral form is the highly diluted homeopathic preparation.
Do not apply to broken or damaged skin, open wounds, eyes or mucous membranes.
As a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) it can cause allergic contact dermatitis; prolonged topical use can also irritate the skin.
Generally very safe. Essential oil should not be ingested in large amounts. Rarely, contact dermatitis may occur. May potentiate the effect of sedative medications. Avoid therapeutic doses during pregnancy.
Duke (2002) rates lavender as ++ and provides clinical evidence (score 2) for carminative activity, consistent with Commission E approval for nervous stomach disorders and functional abdominal complaints. Additional experimental activities include anxiolytic, antispasmodic, and antiseptic effects. The essential oil demonstrates COX-2 inhibitory and Alzheimer's-relevant properties at the experimental level. Dose: 1–2 teaspoons (4–8 g) dried flowers as tea; 1–3 drops essential oil in a carrier for topical or aromatherapy use. Aromatic mountain perennial herb with a basal rosette of oval, hairy leaves and one or two pairs of smaller opposite leaves on an erect, softly hairy flowering stem. Each stem bears one or a few large, bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flower heads with narrow, slightly twisted ray florets.[4]
Aromatic, evergreen, woody-based perennial subshrub with narrow, grey-green, felted leaves. Slender flowering spikes carrying whorls of small, tubular, two-lipped violet-blue flowers rise well above the foliage on long, unbranched stalks.[4]
Habitat
Grows in acidic, nutrient-poor mountain meadows, pastures and open woodland, typically at moderate to high elevations across central and northern Europe; increasingly scarce in the wild due to habitat loss and overharvesting.[4]
Native to the mountains of the western Mediterranean (southern France, Spain, Italy); widely cultivated in sunny, well-drained, often calcareous sites across temperate and Mediterranean climates worldwide.[4]
Harvesting
The flower heads are picked by hand as they open, in mid- to late summer, and dried quickly in a warm, shaded, airy place; wild populations are protected in many regions, so cultivated or sustainably wildcrafted material is preferred.[4]

Traditional Uses
Arnica flower has a long central European folk reputation, reflected in the name 'leopard's bane' and 'mountain tobacco', as a topical remedy for bruising, sprains, muscle soreness and swelling after minor injury, applied only to unbroken skin. Internal use of the whole herb has always been considered dangerous and is confined to highly diluted homeopathic preparations.[4]
Lavender flower has a long Mediterranean and European tradition as a calming, sedative herb for nervous tension, anxiety and insomnia, and as a mild digestive carminative and antiseptic for minor wounds and skin irritation; the essential oil in particular has an extensive modern clinical evidence base for anxiety and sleep support.[4]

Apply to unbroken skin only. If symptoms persist after 3 to 4 days a healthcare practitioner should be consulted. Not recommended under 12 years.
