Abstract

Emodin, a natural anthraquinone derivative and a major bioactive constituent of Polygonum cuspidatum (Reynoutria japonica), possesses anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, but can also cause toxicity at high doses. This review summarises the pharmacology, toxicity and pharmacokinetics of emodin.
