Randomized trial

Abstract

A randomized controlled trial assessed the olfactory impact of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and rosemary essential oils on cognition and mood in 144 healthy volunteers. Lavender produced a decrement in working-memory performance and slower reaction times compared with controls, but the lavender group was significantly more content than controls, indicating lavender aroma produces objective cognitive and subjective mood effects consistent with a calming/sedative action.
