The Genus Hyssopus: Traditional Use, Phytochemicals and Pharmacological Properties
Abstract
The genus Hyssopus includes seven plant species rich in various groups of biologically active substances with a wide spectrum of pharmacological action. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the botanical research, extraction methods, chemical composition (mono- and sesquiterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids) and pharmacological activity of Hyssopus plants, including Hyssopus officinalis, noting that composition depends on growth location, weather, chemotype and extraction method.
