Herb-drug interactions
Traditional / reference
Abstract
A review of herb-drug interactions. St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is prominently implicated: mild serotonin syndrome when combined with serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, and decreased bioavailability of digoxin, theophylline, cyclosporin and phenprocoumon. The review emphasises that health-care practitioners should caution patients against mixing herbs and pharmaceutical drugs — an important safety consideration for St John's wort use.
