Abstract

Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has been used for centuries as a medicine and nutritional supplement, but safety data are limited. In three genotoxicity studies and a teratogenicity study, seabuckthorn berry oil showed no mutagenic activity (Ames test), no effect on sperm morphology or micronucleus rate, and no maternal or embryo toxicity, supporting the safe use of seabuckthorn berry oil for dietary consumption.
