Anti-inflammatory Action of Green Tea
Abstract
Green tea and its major component epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) have anti-inflammatory effects, suppressing the expression of inflammatory cytokines and inflammation-related enzymes. Human, cellular and animal studies indicate beneficial effects against inflammatory diseases, largely explained by EGCG acting as an antioxidant scavenging reactive oxygen species and attenuating NF-kB activity. Care should be taken to avoid overdosage, which may cause hepatic injury.
