Abstract

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is widely known for its anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties, the main antioxidant agents being catechins (epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate and epigallocatechin gallate). Catechins strongly neutralise reactive oxygen and nitrogen species; epigallocatechin gallate presents the most potent anti-inflammatory and anticancer potential. The review summarises the anticancer effects and molecular signaling pathways of major green tea catechins.
