A study on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of the Artemisia vulgaris L. extract and its fractions
Abstract
Vietnamese people use mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) to treat arthritis and gout. Ethanol extracts significantly decreased carrageenan-induced paw oedema in mice and showed significant antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS), and the ethyl acetate fraction displayed the most potent xanthine oxidase inhibition. Five flavonoids were isolated (luteolin, rutin, apigenin, myricetin, quercetin); the results support the use of mugwort to treat gout by suppressing xanthine oxidase and reducing uric acid production.
