Efficacy and Safety of Herbal Supplements with Anxiolytic, Antidepressant, and Sedative Action: A Review of Clinical Data and Toxicological Risks
Abstract
Narrative review of clinical evidence and toxicological risks of plant-based anxiolytic, antidepressant and sedative supplements. Identifies clinically relevant risks including cytochrome P450-mediated drug interactions, excessive sedation and serotonin syndrome, and warns that combining sedative or serotonergic herbs with each other or with CNS-active medicines requires careful monitoring because of additive pharmacodynamic effects.
