Saporin from Saponaria officinalis as a Tool for Experimental Research, Modeling, and Therapy in Neuroscience
Abstract
Saporin, a ribosome-inactivating protein extracted from Saponaria officinalis, becomes highly cell-specific when conjugated to ligands and is widely used in neuroscience to induce selective degeneration of cell subpopulations, to model neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's) and to study sleep, anesthesia, epilepsy and pain.
